- Penguin 4.0 is the latest update to the algorithm used by Google to index websites, to crawl for content and to rank websites on their search results pages. Penguin 4.0 works in real time and is a part of the core algorithm. It is not an update as the earlier Penguin versions were. Penguin 4.0 will blacklist sites and also unblock sites as and when they do or do not breach the guidelines of the giant search engine.
- Penguin 4.0 is webpage specific. It will discriminate between a webpage and a website. Hence, one spam page or a webpage using black hat strategy will get blocked but the website will still function and remain indexed with Google. However, a website that is entirely a spam or uses black hat for all its pages will be blocked.
- Blacklisted sites will be reviewed and if they are found in the green, using white hat practices and without any suspicious content, then they would be unblocked. This will impact the existing ranking in every given domain where blacklisted sites had propelled lower ranked sites. Penguin 4.0 is in the algorithm and will run real-time. There will be no other Penguin update in the future as the updates will kick in organically whenever algorithmic updates are initiated. But that doesn’t mean Google will not roll out standalone updates to fix loopholes as they emerge and get identified.
SEO has evolved rapidly in the last five years. Partly, it has been the changing dynamics of the virtual world and how social media has impacted search engines. Partly, it has been the regular revisions of the of the major search engines that have tried to improve their own algorithms to feature better and more relevant results by the virtue of SEO. However you assess the evolution of SEO, the only constant about it has been change.
It is only expected that SEO will change further in 2017 and the indication has already been planted in the rollout of Penguin 4.0. All SEO services would have to factor in Penguin 4.0 hereon. Any SEO agency that doesn’t pay heed to the changes or if their SEO packages don’t factor in the changes that are being brought about by Penguin 4.0 would cease to remain relevant.
